It wasn’t just a champion who won the title at the Italian Internationals. It was a man, a 24 year old boy, who won the hearts of an entire country. Jannik Sinner, the world number 1, transformed the sporting victory into a gesture of humanity so profound that it moved Italy from North to South.

«Sofia… she chose me».

With these simple words, pronounced with a voice broken by emotion, Sinner recounted the moment that changed his perspective. During the awards ceremony on the Centrale of the Foro Italico, a nine-year-old girl, Sofia, an oncology patient at the Gemelli Polyclinic, ran towards him. Among thousands of spectators and children present, she chose him. She took him by the hand, jumped for joy and never let him go. That innocent contact, that pure smile and those eyes full of hope touched something deep inside the South Tyrolean champion.

A few days later, Sinner decided to transform that emotion into concrete action. He donated100.000 euroof the prize money won in Rome at the “Tennis & Friends in Corsia” project of the Policlinico Gemelli Hospital in Rome. An extraordinary initiative that brings tennis and sport into pediatric oncology departments, to give moments of normality and joy to children who are fighting the hardest disease.

But Jannik didn’t stop at the donation.

He wanted to do more. Much more.

Accompanied by discreet staff, he returned to Gemelli to meet Sofia again. There, in front of the shining eyes of doctors, nurses and parents, he knelt down, hugged the little girl tightly and gave her a special gift: a tennis racket personalized with his name, a sweatshirt from his team and, above all, a handwritten letter.

«Sofia, you chose me on the most important pitch in Italy. Now I choose you. Every time you play, remember that I’m rooting for you. You will come back stronger than before, I promise.”

These words, read with a trembling voice by little Sofia, made not only her, but also the healthcare staff who fight alongside her every day, burst into tears. Many nurses and doctors, accustomed to seeing suffering, were unable to hold back their tears when faced with such an authentic and selfless gesture.

A different champion

Jannik Sinner is no stranger to acts of generosity, but this time he exceeded all expectations. Raised in Sesto Pusteria, Alto Adige, with values of humility, work and respect instilled by his family, the young tennis player has always kept his feet on the ground despite his world successes. Winner of the Australian Open, US Open and now dominator also on the Roman red clay, Sinner represents for many young Italians not only a sporting model, but an example of a man.

“Sport can save lives,” Sinner said during a brief informal interview after his hospital visit. «Not only because it teaches us to fight, but because it creates bridges. Sofia taught me that sometimes an outstretched hand is worth more than a trophy.”

The “Tennis & Friends in Corsia” project, born from a collaboration between the Italian Tennis Federation and the Gemelli Polyclinic, brings teachers and professional players directly into the hospital corridors. Children can try to hit the ball, laugh, forget about chemotherapy, tests and sleepless nights for a few hours. Thanks to Sinner’s donation, the project can be expanded: new modular fields, equipment, visits from other champions and above all psychological support for families.

Sofia’s story

Sofia is a warrior. Diagnosed with a rare tumor two years ago, she faced heavy chemotherapy cycles with a smile that won over the entire department. His passion for tennis was born watching the matches on TV during his hospitalizations. When he learned that Sinner would play in Rome, he insistently asked the doctors to be able to attend a training session. The rest is history: fate did the rest.

“When Sofia returned to the room after meeting Jannik for the first time, she couldn’t stop repeating: ‘He held my hand, mom! The champion held my hand!'” says her mother, her eyes still red. «For us he was a ray of light in a dark period. We have no words to thank Jannik. He gave hope to the whole family.”

Italy crying and applauding

The news spread within a few hours on social media and in the Italian media. #SinnerSofia has become a national trending topic. Thousands of messages of affection arrived from all over: former champions such as Adriano Panatta, Matteo Berrettini and Flavia Pennetta publicly praised the gesture. The President of the Republic sent a message of personal congratulations, underlining how “Italian sport shows its most beautiful face through gestures like this”.

The world of international tennis also reacted. Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and other colleagues shared images of the embrace on their profiles, accompanied by words of admiration. “This is the true meaning of being champions,” Alcaraz wrote.

But beyond the likes and comments, what really matters is the concrete impact on families experiencing the nightmare of pediatric cancer. According to data from the Gemelli Hospital, every year over 1,800 children and adolescents are treated for cancer. Projects like “Tennis & Friends” do not cure the disease, but they enormously improve the quality of life during treatment.

Over 100,000 euros

Sinner’s donation is not just a number. It’s a signal. It proves that success can and should be used to give back to society. In an era in which many athletes limit themselves to sponsored posts, Jannik has chosen the path of concreteness and confidentiality. He specifically asked that the hospital visit not be transformed into a media show, but lived in authenticity.

“I just wanted Sofia to know she’s not alone,” she said simply.

Today, thanks to him, dozens of children will be able to dream bigger. They will be able to hold a racket and, for a few hours, feel like champions too. And who knows, maybe among those children there will be the next generation of Italian tennis players.

Jannik Sinner won the Rome tournament. But above all he won something infinitely more important: he won the heart of Italy.

And while Sofia clutches her new racket and rereads Jannik’s letter before sleeping, an entire nation smiles through tears, proud of its champion.

A hug that will remain in history.
